It's no secret that a visit to Target for toilet paper and garbage bags means you'll come out with a cart full of things you didn't know you needed. I recently popped into the store for some home essentials and the shelves in the beauty department were stocked with affordable finds, so I walked the aisles and started filling up my cart. Since the weather is changing, I added in some affordable moisturizing products to keep my skin in shape during the cooler months and basics to elevate everyday, all without spending too much money on stuff I wouldn't use.
Here's what I scooped up on my recent Target run—some are new favorites and some products I buy over the years.
- Garnier Micellar Cleansing Water: I normally use the Bioderma micellar water, but I ran out and thought it would be good to try a new one at the drugstore. I mainly keep this product on hand to take off my eye makeup, I actually find it less irritating than regular makeup remover, but it's also nice to take off all of your makeup, too. This cleansing water is made up of micelles, which surround the dirt and breaks it down. It doesn't irritate my eyes or skin and you can use it all over your face without the need to rinse. I actually like to double cleanse with this product. I'll use the micellar water first then use a cleanser on top. I was impressed with this one and it removed stubborn eye makeup easily without any redness. As much as I love the Bioderma, this one is pretty good for the price.
- Dr. Bronners Pure-Castille Soap in Peppermint: I admit I get caught up in the whole pretty packaging, high-end body washes that look great in your shower and cost a pretty penny. However, when I want something other than Dove bar soap I grab Dr. Bronners. This brand has been around forever. The ingredients are simple and clean, made with organic oils such as coconut, olive and hemp. I like to apply this in my palm and apply it to my body and work into a light lather. I also use it with a loofah and exfoliating gloves (mentioned below) and it always leaves my skin feeling clean and smelling nice and fresh. I just tried the peppermint scent, which I was nervous about (I did not want to smell like a candy cane), but it's pleasantly nice and refreshing. More subtle than I thought. While this item can be used for many things—laundry, dish washing and shaving—I leave it in the bathroom as a body wash.
- CND Solar Oil: My cuticles get dry and ragged this time of year and also get in bad shape from washing dishes and hands frequently. I've used this almond-scented cuticle oil since it came across my desk when I worked as a beauty editor at a celebrity weekly years ago. I apply this at night and throughout the day (even when I'm typing on the computer) when I feel my nails need some moisture, before a meeting and event. I also feel that when I use this oil daily I don't need to cut my cuticles as often, which I am trying to avoid during salon manicures.
- Maybelline Full 'N Soft Mascara: One of my favorite drugstore mascaras out there, which is just as good as the more expensive ones. The brush is proportioned well, so it adds fullness to every lash and never gets clumpy or heavy like others. It's also infused with vitamin E so it keeps lashes healthy and less prone to breakage. I love this mascara for daytime as it instantly opens my eyes and can be layered for a more dramatic effect for the evening.
- Revlon Volumazing Mascara: I threw this mascara in my cart because the brush looked like the Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara, which I have used before and is very good, so I was interested in trying it. I loved how this brush worked in my lashes to build length and volume while looking really lush—just as good as the over $20 tubes. There were no clumps or smudges throughout the day and I liked the added fringe to my eyes.
- La Roche Posay Toleriane Hydrating Gentle Cleanser: I've featured this cleanser before on the blog and haven't used it in a year, but it really is a good one to have on hand especially in the winter time. It has a milky texture with no fragrances or harsh ingredients, but also has hydrating ceramides and niacinamide for repairing the skin. I use retinol and AHAs on alternating weeknights so I look for a gentle cleanser that won't irritate my skin and cause inflammation.
- The Bathery Charcoal Infused Exfoliating Gloves: I'm a big fan of exfolating gloves. So much that I don't even bother with messy body scrubs or exfoliating body washes anymore because these little gloves get the job done without any mess nor a big expense. I use these whenever I want to keep skin soft, supple and remove the dead skin. I prefer to have them without the charcoal, but it is an added bonus and makes my skin always feel soft and smooth.
