It’s crazy to me that I’ve been living in Rhode Island now for a little over a year. The year went so fast, almost a blur, and I spent most of my days exploring my new city and all it has to offer. I love the beautiful historic architecture, the hilly streets in College Hill, the well-maintained colonial homes, and how it easy is to get around by foot or car. There are great coffee shops, amazing restaurants and cool indie shops that make this city unique. Last weekend, I did my first Instagram Takeover for the travel site, Fathom, and shared some of my favorite things to see and do in the city. Here’s a little recap and some of my favorites that did not make the list:
SEE
RISD Museum is one of the best places to take in some unique art, photography, textiles and more, and I love the space, which is a mix of new construction and colonial architecture. On Sundays admission is free, and on the third Thursday evening of each month.
College Hill: Home to Brown University, RISD and some of the city’s most beautiful colonial-style homes and buildings. The streets are hilly and is a great spot to walk on foot.
Prospect Park: I love taking the boys to this park that is perched on a hill overlooking the city with a statue of the founder, Roger Williams.
River/WaterFire — Three rivers run through the city, and on certain Saturday nights there’s WaterFire, a lighting display where 100 bonfires on the river are lit, illuminating the city. I still love walking the river any time of day.
West Side — This neighborhood has some grit, and is a little old school, but it has a hip vibe with great restaurants, bakeries and retail shops.
EAT/DRINK
Providence is a great spot for foodies. My favorite place for dinner right now is Oberlin, voted by Bon Appétit as one of the best restaurants of 2016. I love the lively atmosphere and the food is outstanding. The gnocchi with clams and griddled wild mushrooms are not to be missed.
Persimmon’s new space is beautiful with small delicious plates to share.
One of the best spots in town to get a well-crafted cocktail with a cool vibe is at The Eddy, in Downcity. I love how it’s a little secluded off the main drag and always a good atmosphere.
I can sit in the cozy, chic lobby at The Dean for hours doing work, drinking a coffee from Bolt and reading the papers, but at night I especially love North for their inventive food and cocktails.
I spend many days hanging at The Shop in the Fox Point neighborhood that serves up strong cold brew and the best avocado toast in town.
Dave’s Coffee on Main Street almond milk espresso and match lattes.
Seven Stars Bakery, which has three locations in the Providence area, always puts me in a good mood for the tastiest homemade breads and pastries. My favorite is the West End location, always bustling with a good vibe.
