What To See and Do on Block Island

New England has amazing island getaways—Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket are top favorites—but there's something about Block Island that has my heart.

I first visited Block Island the summer after I moved to Rhode Island. I've always heard about this island, but did not know much about it. Block Island is 12 miles off the coast of Rhode Island and an easy ferry ride from the mainland.  You can also visit by ferry from New London, CT or Montauk, NY.

Block Island is one of those islands that feels a bit of a throwback, with its old charming inns and shops. Many people come for a day trip, but I personally recommend staying a bit longer if you can.

Here are some of my favorite things to do on Block Island:

SEE AND DO

North Lighthouse

Mohegan Bluffs is one of my favorite spots. Walk down the 141 steps to a scenic rocky beach with beautiful views. It's not the best for swimming , but it's a great place to go on a little adventure and enjoy the beach below.

Paddle Board on one of the salt ponds that traverse throughout the island. Kayak and paddle board rentals are at multiple spots on the island and fairly reasonable.

We spend a lot of time at the beach on Block Island.  My favorites are Scotch and Crescent Beach, but Mansion is also pretty and scenic.

A visit to the North and South Lighthouses are a favorite. You can walk the beach at North Light and even see the seals swimming.

Go clamming or paddle board at Andy's Way and take in the beauty of the protected salt marsh pond that leads into Great Salt Pond. It's a good spot to look for birds, crabs and fish, too.

Hiking — there are so many trails around the island. I love the trails by Rodman's Hollow, but others such as Hodge and Clay Head are popular.

BEST WAY TO GET AROUND THE ISLAND

Rent or bring your bike to the island. It's the best way to get around the island quickly, but be prepared for hilly roads outside of town and the main beach.

EAT & DRINK

The Barn — one of the best spots on the island for a refined meal in a cozy atmosphere, tucked behind The Spring House. Order the flavorful bouillabaisse and the wood-grilled tomahawk steak.

Dead Eye Dick's — a lively spot for lunch or dinner with fresh seafood dishes and tasty cocktails, right in New Harbor.

The Oar — a family favorite for sunset cocktails, sushi and fish tacos. A great spot to catch sunset and for the kids to run around. Don't miss their mudslides!

Persephone's Kitchen — a great spot for breakfast or lunch. Go for their bowls, specialty toasts and healthy smoothies.

Rebecca's — my go-to spot for a quick casual lunch on the island with the kids. It's always fresh and made to order.

Old Post Office Bagel Shop — for bagels, coffee and pastries not too far from the beach.

The Ice Cream Place — a go-to spot for homemade ice cream and waffle cones.

Block Island Beach House — for cocktails on the patio, fish tacos and the family beach house BBQ.

The Spring House — for cocktails overlooking the water on the Adirondack chairs. The dirty martini with blue cheese olives is a must!
